Osteonecrosis / Ahlbaeck’s disease
Bone-marrow oedemas, bone necroses and bone infarction in the shoulder, hips, knees and tarsus
If an area of a bone is no longer sufficiently supplied with blood, then pain and restrictions to movement occur. Despite the medical progress, the causes of this rather rare clinical pattern have not been completely clarified.
Depending on the stage, the bone and cartilage tissue, particularly at the head of the femur, on the shoulder or knee joints, and also on the tarsal joints is more or less seriously destroyed. The causes of this illness are wide ranging: Incorrect positioning, accidents, obesity, pregnancy, taking cortisone, neurological illnesses, diabetes and alcoholism are all possible causes. Professional and deep sea divers are also at risk, however. A genetic predisposition cannot be ruled out either.
Osteonecrosis, Bone-marrow oedemas and Ahlbaeck’s disease: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) offers regeneration through to healing
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy - HBOT - has achieved excellent successes in this area. During treatment the patient either sits or lies down in a therapy chamber. S/he inhales pure oxygen for 30 minutes at high pressure on three occasions. For a duration of three weeks, the body’s powers of self healing are assisted with daily treatments. The positive effect of outpatient HBO therapy has been proved by different medical studies. In this particular clinical picture, HBOT brings about a reduction in the bone oedema and the new development of blood vessels, connective tissue fibre and bone forming cells.
Reduce pain and avoid the replacement of joints by means of HBOT
Most patients undergoing pressure chamber therapy (HBOT) experience rapid pain reduction. n most patients I experience a rapid reduction in pain. Through the regenerative effect of HBO, operations can be avoided or the time until it is necessary to replace a joint, especially at the knee, can be clearly increased. With younger patients, it should be possible to avoid joint operations and joint replacements due to the limited durability of prostheses. Experience has demonstrated that the risk increases with repeated operations in the same area.
For osteonecrosis, transient osteoporosis and Ahlbaeck’s disease:
Magnetic resonance tomography demonstrates clear diagnosis and therapy results
For quite some time, HBOT therapy is administered for bone- and osteoporosis diseases in close cooperation with the attending surgeon. By means of magnetic resonance tomography (MRT), the attending physician can normally provide a clear diagnosis. The less advanced the osteonecrosis is, the better the chances are for the alleviation of pain, and even complete healing. Together with your doctor, the HBOT doctor develops a treatment program customized for your immediate needs. The body needs time to regenerate cells, capillaries and tissue. Therefore, regarding osteonecrosis, transient osteoporosis and Ahlbaeck’s disease, 20-30 treatment sessions are needed in order to reach a sufficient level of healing. With the help of MRT scans, the therapy result achieved with HBO can also be exactly proven and documented. Furthermore, MRI-images can provide evidence and detailed documentation of the HBOT therapy results after treating osteonecrosis, transient osteoporosis and Ahlbaeck’s disease.
