Chronic Wounds
Wound healing disorders can have many causes:
- The tissue is not supplied with sufficient blood.
- An insufficient amount of oxygen is enriching the tissue.
- The tissue and the capillaries are damaged, e.g. through the consequences of an accident, a course of radiation or through a previous operation.
Wounds normally heal within a month. If the wound does not heal within this period of time, treatment of the wound must be reconsidered and other therapies be considered.
Chronic, open wounds are an additional health risk:
- Open wounds are frequently infected with bacteria, that delay the healing process.
- Open wounds cause pain.
- Open wounds prevent the usual toiletries (such as showering, bathing).
- Delayed wound healing leads to poor scarring (stability, appearance).
- Open wounds can lead to repeated surgical procedures (debridement, irrigation, etc.).
- Chronic, open wounds interfere with recreational activities and sports.
- Open wounds affect social relations (ability to walk, visits, close contact).
- Open wounds hinder mobility.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) supports Chronic Wound Healing
HBOT is a great help for healing chronic wounds. Through the heightened pressure in the therapy chamber substantially more oxygen is dissolved physically in the blood plasma. The profound in setting process of regeneration leads to healing of even chronic wounds.
- Up to a 7 % oxygen content in the blood, or up to 20 times the normal amount.
- The oxygen enriched blood reaches the tissue.
- Biological processes are initiated which do not occur without oxygen.
Many even chronic wounds can be healed with the HBOT functioning principle.
HBOT offers the best chances for chronic wounds which are arterially caused
Examples:
- Occlusive arterial diseases, such as smoker’s leg, in which the capillaries have been damaged by nicotine.
- Multi-fragmented fracture / crush injury, where the blood vessels which supply the tissue with blood are torn or crushed.
- Diabetic foot due to diabetes mellitus
- The blood vessels are affected through the radiation of tissue, as a result of which chronic wounds occur.
- Bite injuries (e.g. when part of the external ear is bitten off)
Our doctors analyse the wounds. They carefully ascertain whether HBOT can close the wound.
HBOT in Freiburg: optional out-patient and day-hospital treatment
The Pressure Chamber Centre of Freiburg not only offers its patients ambulant care with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, but for patients with chronic wounds it provides extensive and interdisciplinary care through the services of the HBO2-day clinic of the Centre Hyperbaric Medicine.
