Diabetic foot
The diabetic foot disease – small cause with grave consequences
In the long run, the chronically increased blood sugar level of diabetes mellitus will lead to an occlusion of the smallest blood vessels, mainly in the foot. The smallest injury to a foot where the circulation is already bad can then lead to a deep wound which no longer heals. Seventy percent of the amputations carried out on the foot or the leg in Germany are not attributable to accidents but the consequence of such chronic wounds.
Early application of HBOT avoids or reduces the number of such amputations due to the diabetic foot syndrome
If badly healing wounds refuse to heal or do not sufficiently heal with standard or conventional therapy, then completing a course of HBO therapy at the same time can achieve significant success. Depending on the state of the wound, in cooperation with the administering doctor, amputations can be avoided or limited.
Important for diabetic foot syndrome: Reliable cooperation between the patient, the physician and the HBOT doctor
The chances of HBOT will be evaluated by our specialist doctors prior to the start of the therapy. The sooner the treatment is started with, the better these chances are! If a wound does not heal within 30 days, HBO treatment should be started. For being successful, it is important for the physician and the patient to work “hand in hand”. This includes optimum stabilization on medication by the doctor and adherence to a special diet by the patient. Only then, HBOT can ensure wound healing by enrichment of oxygen in the tissue. Here, you have access not only to ambulant care with HBOT but also to extensive and interdisciplinary day-clinical care at our Pressure Chamber Centre of Freiburg.
