Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in case of Hearing Disorders

Inner ear diseases are no inevitable destiny

“You’ll just have to live with it.”  - Sometimes, tinnitus patients are still confronted with this statement even today.
Acute inner ear diseases comprise the following

• acute hearing loss (a sudden reduction in hearing in at least one ear)
• acute acoustic trauma (e.g. an explosion, a firework, an accident at work)
• an isolated occurrence of tinnitus (ear noise) within the first three months.

Sub-acute inner ear diseases are diseases that began 4 to 12 months ago.

The sooner the therapy starts the greater are the chances to recover from hearing disorders :

In the acute stage and depending on the situation, administering the differing forms of therapy is important in the form of a step-by-step therapy:

• Medication
• Infusions
• HBOT

It is therefore important to progress through each of the individual therapy steps in order to be able to make use of all the corresponding possibilities during the acute phase.

HBOT as a reserve and complementary therapy: a pleasant extra opportunity

If medications and infusions are of no or only of insufficient help, the different therapeutic approach of the hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the inner ear treatment of hearing disorders opens up an extra opportunity: Medication and infusions work through vascular dilation / encouraging the circulation. HBOT works through the increased level of dissolved oxygen in the blood. The oxygen content of the sensory cells’ nutrient fluid increases by a factor of 4 to 6; thus the entire inner ear, including previously oxygen-deficient areas, receives a concentrated supply. Even in case of permanent hearing disorders, HBOT still offers a chance, even if a only small one. The same principle applies: The earlier HBOT is applied, the greater are the chances of recovery.
