Idiopathic facial palsy / Bell’s palsy
An often misinterpreted clinical picture leads to a loss of the quality of life
Facial palsy often affects younger patients, e.g. those between 20 and 40 years of age. The paralysis often affects one half of the face and is accompanied by impairments of sight, hearing and taste. Often, speech is impaired and the eyes cannot be closed completely.
Facial palsy is extremely debilitating for patients in this age group:
- They have to compete to get a good job.
- They may be trying to find a partner and start a family.
- It creates the false impression of the patient looking ‘beaten up’ and physically or mentally unstable.
Visible facial paralysis is oft misinterpreted by the layman as the consequence of a stroke. The goal of sufferers is therefore a rapid as possible recovery from this misunderstood and misinterpreted clinical picture. Patients want to recover their original attractiveness as quickly as they can.
In case of facialis paresis or Bell’s palsy, HBOT will bring rapid healing
The application of the hyperbaric oxygen therapy - HBOT - presents the following advantages:
- Complete recovery in most cases.
- Considerably shorter recovery time, approx. 20 days instead of 5 weeks.
- The deficit level with patients who have not yet fully recovered is lower with HBO
HBOT is a good idea especially when overcoming the illness as quickly as possible is important. For people who care about their physical appearance and want to look fit and healthy, this can be an important help.
Diagnosis facial palsy / Bell’s palsy:First of all tablets, and then HBOT?
With tablets, the recovery time is not only longer, the degree of success is also considerably lower. That’s why we do not advise a step-by-step therapy which initially involves medication followed by HBOT.
The best start with HBOT
It is best if you start with HBOT within a week after the onset of the illness. You then have the best chances of success. Research results concerning success rates for treatements that commence later than this are not available , rate of recovery would probably slightly lower.
